After a few days of experimenting with some ground work (lungeing, etc...), I decided to see what Sassy would do under saddle. We rode in her own pasture with her buddy Tiara right there, and she was really good. A little nervous, a little fussy toward the end, but very responsive, pliable, and willing. All GOOD signs. She tried to plant her ass at first, but a little tap of the dressage whip solved that problem. After that, she moved forward perfectly. She bent willingly, moved away from the leg willingly, and even collected a bit at nice, slow, smooth sitting trot.
All in all it was WAY better than I expected and gave me great hope for the potential that this horse has. (And for someone who hasn't ridden but for five minutes at Cynthia's house in two whole years, Mama didn't do so bad herself!)
